I have had speech problems since I was 12 and first time I realized I needed stuttering help was when I was 13. My mom found a therapist and she told her that the best treatment for me would be a hospitalization for at least 1 month. I obviously did not want to go, so we decided that I would see her twice a week before school. The only goal was to get rid of my stammering. No one was asking me any other questions or looking for some reasons. It was all about using techniques they had been taught years before me. My parents did not know how to handle this kind of disorder. What do we know now?

Some believe there is no cure for stuttering. The majority (luckily :-)) thinks that people who stammer can recover and this speech problem can be eliminated. But it takes time and all depends on the individual. Stuttering help is different for adults and children. Kids rely more on family and parents. As I said before, my first “speech” was related only to fluency. I learned a style where I had to breathe in every time I started a new sentence or made a pause while talking. It slowed me down and I became more patient when speaking. The results were great and I became fluent within few months. But then I had to stop going to this therapist as she moved to another city. My second mentor was a psychologist at the secondary school. We were talking a lot about my feelings and reasons for my stuttering. My parents did not live together at that time, which was according to her the main point of my problem. We tried hypnosis, which did not help. To be honest I thought it would be like in the movies where the patient falls asleep straight away …

Then we tried visualization and even more talking. Good thing was I learned a lot about myself and know myself better. My speech did not get better though. Third stuttering help came from the best speech therapist in Slovakia. He thought me the basics of good breathing, smoothing out first words andave me a LOT of homework. It was great for my fluency and I became much much better, nearly 100%. This is why I think that with the right combination of fluency shaping and psychological approach stuttering can be eliminated. This is my personal experience and some people who do not know me do not realize that I used to stutter a lot. A miracle happened and I am very happy for this.
