Being able to speak correctly is a luxury often overlooked by the average person, but to those with difficulties verbalizing their thoughts or hearing others, it can be a life-changing ordeal. As someone who has overcome, and still exhibits symptoms of a speech disorder, I know what it's like to have all of my ideas and thoughts constrained to my self. No longer is the inability to speak effectively a nottable disadvantage, as just as much communication today takes place through text mediums like the internet; truly, we live in a digital age.

In fact, it's tempting to go as far as to say that many with speech violations find themselves learning and honing their crafts in a way that others simply can not generate the motivation for, because because there is a very personal feeling that all of us with speech disabilities crave for. While others are chatting in a classroom and wasting time, those of us in the know were most likely writing, solving problems in our minds or taking on any number of critical thinking tasks. As someone who did very poorly in school, but is self-taught on a multitude of disciplines, I know first-hand the advantages to having such an attachment to learning and growing as an individual.

How to Cure Stammering – What is the Root Cause?

Learning how to cure stammering was something that was top of my priority list not long ago. It was something I had suffered with since early childhood but I always assumed I would grow out of it; however as an adult I continued to suffer badly with speech. Read on to learn what I did to speak fluently and with confidence for the first time in my life and how you can do it too.

The main problem when learning how to cure stammering was actually coming to terms that there was no cure. After going back and forth to my doctor who made making me do these silly speaking exercises that never really helped, I began to think that maybe I would have stuck with this condition for the rest of my life.

Growing up as a teenager with a stutter is probably one of the worst things a guy can go through, especially because other kids can be so cruel. I suffered badly with a confidence problem because of my stutter and this made it much harder to meet new people and make new friends. My social life was pretty poor, not to mention my lack of any type of success with girls! I mean what girl want's to be with a shy, low confident stuttering guy anyway?

I knew that this was something I wanted to get rid of completely, not just learn to control, I wanted total fluency. I remember my doctor telling me to speak slower, so I did for a while. Ok it may have helped a little bit but it made me sound like I was kind of thick idiot! I did not want that, I wanted to speak normally like everyone else!

So I stopped going to see this doctor and instead went about trying to find out how to cure stammering my own way. After doing a lot of reading I realized that that the fact I was very shy and maybe even had a mild form of social anxiety did not help my problem. I discovered that I had to attack the root cause of my stutter.

In order to learn how to cure stammering I had to build up my broken confidence, and this is where it all begins. I met up with others stutterers and we discussed our problems together which really helped and we began to build our confidence with meeting new people and trying to be more open with people.

Stuttering – Causes and Treatment Options

Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is interrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words, or phrases. Some stutterers may not able to produce any sounds at all termed as “blocks”. What could have been the explanations for the speech discrepancies? Discussed below are some of the main reasons of the occurrence of this upsetting condition.

1. Stuttering tends to run in the family. If a close family member is a stutterer, another member would most likely inherit the stutterer gene.

We all know children can be cruel to each other one moment and the best of friends the next. Very often childhood verbal or non-verbal interactions involving psychological cruelty are forgotten immediately, but not every time. Some criticism of physical disability by children towards children can stick and be transported forward through life. By the time the affected individual turns thirty, that simple and innocent criticism at the age of six has been blown out of all proportion. Guess who blows it out of proportion, we do! No one's tougher on ourselves than us. We stutterers are very good at pulling ourselves apart. “I can not do this, I can not do that, people think this … about me! I'm hopeless!” You know the sort of stuff I'm referring to. If I had a dollar for every negative thought I had about myself when my stutter was holding me back, I WOULD BE A MILLIONAIRE.

Recovery from stuttering all gets down to positive thinking. Give it a go, shoot for the stars, just do it! This thinking will set you on the right path. Do not worry if you falter along the way. Keep at it. Maintenance is the key!

Stop Stuttering – How to Win the Chaotic Game of Fluency!

Stuttering and fluency. Two key components of a chaotic equation.

Stuttering. Not JUST a physical speech problem. A problem which affects ALL aspects of one's life.

One's choices, decisions, beliefs, goals, dreams, confidence, who HE / SHE IS and who he CAN BECOME … all his beliefs about himself and his ability to achieve desired goals in life are all run, shaped, controlled and lead by his stuttering mindset. If you are a person who suffers from stuttering, I am sure you would easily relate with this equation.

So, the question here is;

How can we solve this equation?

Here is how …

By understanding, practicing, playing and winning the GAME OF FLUENCY.

The game of fluency has two core components:

1) The Inner Game Of Fluency
2) The Outer Game Of Fluency

Inner game is the mental / conceptual side of the equation. This is your mindset, your beliefs, your intentions, your personality characteristics, the way you approach the problem, etc. This is your mental and conceptual skill set. This is the game you play IN you. If you do not build this strong enough no matter what “fluency techniques” you use, you will either get NO or TEMPORARY results. Self development, which is so critical and essential to win the game of fluency, comes into play at this stage of the game!

On the other hand, outer game is the specific mental and physical tools and techniques you use to take control of your speech. If your inner game is strong and well developed, your outer game will enable you to achieve your goals and get the results you want. The results will only come by playing the outer game but you can not have an effective, result-oriented outer game if you do not back it up with strong inner game. So, in other words, one does not work without the other.

Your game has two parts and BOTH needs to be there in order for you to win this game and reach your speaking goals. Start with the inner game and then get equipped with the outer game. If you get these two core parts of your game handled, there would not be any single reason why you should not make this happen and WIN the GAME OF FLUENCY.

So, the next question you might be asking to yourself is;

How can I improve my inner and outer game?

Inner game can be improved by focusing primarily on SELF development topics which are CUSTOMIZED for stuttering where the outer game can be improved by learning and practicing step by step models, proven strategies, necessary skills, effective speaking tools and techniques, etc.

A Few Advice to Someone Who Stutters on Stuttering Therapies

Over the years, I have attended many support groups for stutterers, and I even helped to run some of them. One thing that I have noticed about the stutterers was that after trying a few stuttering therapies to correct the problem without success, they ever lose hope of ever speaking more fluently. After a while, some of them do not want to try to do anything to correct this disorder. There is one thing that is much worse than failing. It is not doing anything at all!

If you have spent money on some of those stuttering therapies that have failed, you have done yourself a favor. At least, you now know what does not work for you. You are ahead of someone who does not try anything at all. Based on all those failures, you may make one distinction or two in the future that may put you on the right path to speech improvement. From my own experiences, I will tell you that I never regret spending thousands of dollars on different doctors and programs. Without spending money on different things in order to correct this disorder, I would have never found alternative medicine tools that do work.

Please try different stuttering therapies and programs. Do spend money on them! Every dollar that is spent on speech improvement is worth it even if you fail! This is the only way to find out what works and what does not. Asking people around may not always be a good idea. What works for one person may not work for another. It does not really matter if you spend money on this program or on something else. PLEASE DO SOMETHING THOUGH TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM NOW! You need to ask yourself one question. WHAT WILL IT COST ME IF I DO NOT CORRECT MY PROBLEM NOW? Well, if you do not know the answer to this question right away, I got a full answer for you.

1) LOSS OF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES- Please open your local newspaper and look at the job classified section. You will see that more than 80% of the job openings in your town require you to have great communication skills. What is even worse is that many employers who offer only low-paying jobs are asking you to have some oral skills previously. How are you going to get that job? Unfortunately, we live in a very competitive environment where good jobs are scarce. We would have to compete for those jobs with fluent speakers who are just as qualified as you are for them. Who do you think is going to come out as a winner and be hired? A fluent speaker is likely to be hired even if you are more qualified than he or she is for a job. Stutterers face job discrimination every day. There are many scientific studies that indicate it. I decided to post only a small number of studies here.

Opp, KL, Hayden, PA, & Cottrell, GT, in Stuttering and Employment: A survey report, Annual Convention of the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association, Boston, MA (1997) have done a large number of surveys among people who stutter. The results were astonishing. By the way, the severity of stuttering did not seem to matter.

These surveys reported that people who stutter have high rates of unemployment, discrimination in attaining employment, and the lack of promotions because of the fact that they stutter.

Perhaps, the most alarming studies were scientific studies that were done in 1983. According to all outstanding scientific studies, it is doubtful that things have changed for the better today.

Hurst, MI & Cooper, EB, Employer attitudes toward stuttering, Journal of Fluency Disorders, B, 1-12 (1983) surveyed a large number of employers. Amazingly, 85% of all employers who answered those surveys stated that stuttering decrees a person's employability and opportunities to be promoted on a job.

Hurst, MI & Cooper, EB, were so intrigued by these finds that they conducted another scientific study. The results can be found in Vocational rehabilitation counsel 'attitudes toward stuttering, Journal of Fluency Disorders, 8, 13-27 (1983). Vocational rehabilitation counsel who participated in this study all agreed that stuttering was vocally handicapping.

2) LOSS OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES- If you are still going to college, you may do your best to avoid speaking in class. Although it is not always possible, you may try dropping or switching classes in order to avoid making speech presentations in the front of your class. However, if you decide to continue with your education and go on to a graduate, business, law, or medical school, you would not be able to avoid speaking in class. Why not? Your grade in that class will be based on making speech presentations or just answering questions correctly when you are being called on. How are you going to handle all of this speaking out when the majority of people who stutter can not even handle speaking one on one?

3) POOR SOCIAL LIFE- Your dating opportunities may be very limited because of your stuttering. You want to ask a person of your dreams out. However, you are afraid that when you come up to that person, you will make a fool of yourself when nothing will come out of your mouth or when you will be blocking strictly on every single word. Then, you simply do not try anything at all and allow that person to slip away. Occasionally, you will find yourself without a partner that you always wanted to have in your life, and you will be in pain. Moreover, you can not even take advantage of some of that fun stuff out there that your fluent friends are taking advantage of. You do not join political associations, sporting events, or social clubs because they may require you to do the speaking out.

4) LACK OF MATERIAL THINGS- We live in a very financially driven society. Yet, many of us do not feel comfortable talking about having more money or things. Let's face it. You have been put on this planet for a limited period of time, and you need to make your life the best possible experience it can be. This includes having material things that you enjoy. Unfortunately, many of us do not have even a basic comfort in life. Because of our stuttering, we may not be able to get well-paying jobs that will allow us to have a lifestyle that we really deserve. As we get older, our dreams of having things that we always wanted to have simply die out. Life becomes one miserable experience indeed.

5) EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE- On the top, you will have to go through life always being afraid of speaking to others. You will have panic attacks that will never end, anxiety that will never stop torturing you, nervous break downs after having to go through constant and never-ending stress that is associated with speaking out, feelings of helplessness because you do not know what to do to make things better, feelings of hopelessness because you do not think that things can get better, and depression because things always stay the same way they have been before. All these emotions and feelings will cause you to have a very unhappy life that you may never be able to enjoy.

Of course, there are many more reasons to do something about your stuttering RIGHT NOW, which I did not even mention above. PLEASE DO NOT LET TOO MUCH TIME PASS YOU BY WITHOUT CORRECTING YOUR SPEECH! The time that you waste on stuttering will be a regretful one. There are so many opportunities to take advantage of, so many things to experience, and so many things to enjoy when you are speaking fluently. LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ENJOYABLE JOURNEY AND NOT A PAINFUL ONE. If you do not know what to do, let me help you figure this out.

If you tried several stuttering therapies without success, there are only two ways left to deal with this problem. I know that this may not be something that you are ready or you want to hear at this point of your life. The first way can be using a combination of different conventional medicines to deal with this problem. This is a very expensive way to deal with stuttering. Once again, this knowledge is coming from my own experiences in dealing with different medical doctors and their medicines. Using this way to correct stuttering will cost you a lot financially, and it will cost you even more when it comes to your health. All conventional medicines have long term side effects that are very serious. Even short term side effects may well be unbearable for the majority of people who try therapies. The second and the last way to deal effectively with this problem is to use different alternative medicine tools in combination to try to address every symptom of stuttering. This is indeed a better way to approach this disorder. It is certainly cheaper to use alternative medicine tools than it is to use conventional medicines, and there are virtually no side effects.
Instead of trying stuttering therapies, try alternative medicine therapies first! I know you will find out they will change your life.

My Observations About Stuttering Therapy – Support Groups and Dating

Right now, I will offer my own observations about stuttering therapy, support group, stuttering and dating. As you browse through any internet dating website, you will come across many profiles of singles. Those people have not been successful at finding that special someone despite the fact that they do not stutter themselves. Neverheless, they are alone.

Of course, the circumstances that led to them being alone are different. A person may have something wrong with his or her personality that might signal other people to stay away. Some people lack social skills and do not take risks. Some people are insecure.

Leading several support groups in the past, I quickly realized many people who stutter often have several problems I already listed above. When we are young, we often think people will not accept us for who we are. We are insecure because of our stuttering. We are afraid to be perceived as weak and not confident. Thus, we stay away from many social events, not just dating. We depend on some stuttering therapy to correct our stammer. Then, we assume that all our inadequacies will go away by themselves. They NEVER do.

Anyone who is older like me will tell you that the best dating opportunities are in college. People are generally available for dating. They do not have as many negative beliefs about opposition sex that many older people do. They are more open to exploring and taking risks. People who stutter often do not and can not take advantage of many opportunities that their college environment offers to them. Inability to speak fluently, being isolated from others, and always being in pain simply adds to one's already miserable life.

During many support group meetings, I have heard that once a person with his speech problem will go through some stuttering therapy; he will start dating. Once the speech is more or less corrected, it will be time to date. As you already realize, this person does not really get to his dating part. Why not?

No stuttering therapy can correct personality inadequacies that a person who stutters developments.

Unfortunately, if a person does not do what needs to be done in his life, there will be painful regrets and disappointments. Occasionally, he or she will be brave enough to post a personal profile on some dating site. However, this person will eventually realize that mostly “leftovers” that nobody really wants are available for him to date.

By the way, can some support group members help you to select the best stuttering therapy for you and provide some emotional support as you are going through therapy?

I found many support groups did not help me to make my situation better. Many of those groups associated with people who were already very miserable. They were ready to cry on someone's shoulder. Many of those meetings left me totally depressed and paralleled with my own emotional pain.

The recommendations I received from people who were present during the meetings were not helpful either. Their attitude was usually “nothing works.” People did recommend some stuttering therapy. However, what works for one person does not necessarily work for another person. The ironic thing was that people who recommended some speech therapy did not use it either. I stopped coming to support group meetings anyway because I did not see any value in them.

Please note that some support meetings can be beneficial. If the main goal will be to explore all avenues of available help, then many great things could be accomplished. For instance, people can talk about things that were helpful to them in dealing with this condition. Many intensive speech programs could have been demonstrated during those meetings as well. People should be free to criticize various speech techniques. Again, I believe the emphasis of these group gatherings should be placed on finding a “solution” to this problem, and not on finding more pain.

Neverheless, having pain in our lives is what we grow accustomed to. We live in a very competitive society where we have to compete for various jobs. Right now, our economy is in a state of depression. People are losing their jobs, homes, and savings. The level of competition is higher now than it has ever been before in many years. Our competition is not only limited to work. We need to compete for the “best” partners, places to live, schools to attend. Our society imposes these values ​​on us. I did not just create them.

As I experienced myself and observed, most people who stutter are ill-equipped to participate in life. I do not just talk about dating. As a result, we are more often than not end up with jobs that we hate, partners we do not like, and life that we want to escape, but can not. Again, no stuttering therapy can suddenly correct these problems!

However, all hope is not lost. A person who stutters can often make small speech improvements in any stuttering therapy. These small speech improvements can often lead to big improvements. My advice is to start small and progress.

Recover From Stuttering – The Importance of Maintaining Technique

If you have a stutter and feel that you need to do something about it, you probably know about the different forms of therapy available that provide fluency control. One of the most effective systems is fluency shaping therapy using Prolonged Speech strategies. This stuttering therapy has an excellent science-based formula and has given millions of people good levels of fluency control, depending on the individual.

Once you have completed an intensive course or sometimes in-home stuttering therapy, then initially you should achieve good levels of control over your fluency. The feeling you have on completion of these courses in Prolonged or Smooth Speech can be wonderful. You feel like letting your speech gallop off, and you sort of tag along for the wonderful ride that fluency control can give you. Beware! This feeling is risky in terms of extending the control over your fluency. Pull back on those reigns a bit and ensure that the control is there every time you open your mouth to speak.

Maintenance of technique following a stuttering therapy course is just as important as undertaking the course itself. You must know by now that there is no cure for a stutter, just management.

What a drag, I know the last thing you will want to do is spend more time working on your fluency, especially since you feel so good following the course.

The reality is, we can never stop working on our fluency, maintaining our technique, if we want to keep our dreaded stuttering at bay.

Maintenance + Practice = Fluency Control

One of the main objections to the intensive courses was that the control of fluency was not lying. However, criticism of these courses and the therapies taught were unfounded. We all know now that individual control over fluency is really up to us, and that our technique will always work if we allow ourselves to use it!

In Australia, many people who stutter (PWS) have undertaken courses in a fluency shaping therapy called Smooth Speech. These courses were offered to people free of charge. Alas, these courses are few and far between these days. There is an organization called the Australian Speak Easy Association (ASEA) for people who have completed a Smooth Speech / Prolonged Speech course. Here you will find plenty of support from other recovering stutterers. This works well, with members of the Association meeting at various locations around Australia for weekly maintenance sessions. The main aim of the Association is to provide an avenue for PWS to meet with other like-minded individuals so that they can practice and hone their fluency skills. Face-to-face associations like the ASEA are very important for PWS and will always be solid support in recovering stutterers' lives.

Intensive Prolonged Speech courses provide solid training in the technique. In-home stuttering therapy providing solid training is also available. The individual stutterer chooses when, where and how often to have treatment. The internal drive, the motivation to persevere, is vital. There is a program that also provides many hours of face-to-face teletherapy sessions via Skype to ensure that the individual is adopting correct technique. This, I believe, is the future of not only stuttering therapy and maintenance of fluency, but for many other health-related issues. Teletherapy certainly does put the control back into people's hands. It allows people flexibility to slot in practice sessions with like-minded individuals and speech coaches when it suits them. Current research being conducted in Australia is indicative higher success rates with teletherapy than with standard in-clinical therapy.

It's probably too obvious to point out, but when people have to cope with maintaining fluency while living in remote locations, getting together to practice face to face is difficult. The obvious solution is via the home computer and accessing teletherapy over Skype. Today, time is becoming more limiting for us all, it's important to find a cost-effective, time-efficient and best-fit maintenance program that suits us. If we can access therapy and support from the comfort of our own home, why not?

Articulation Delays – What Causes a Speech Sound Disorder?

What causes an articulation disorder? Why do some children have perfect speech at age three while others are difficult to understand at age seven?

There are many causes of articulation disorders. Some children have a hearing loss, either permanent or intermittent loss caused by frequent ear infections. When children go through the critical language learning period of birth to three years, it is very important that they are able to clearly hear those around them. Even a mild loss may make it difficult for the child to differentiate sounds, making it harder for him to master those sounds in his own speech. Hearing deficits account for over 10% of all speech defects.

Other children have physical disabilities that hinder them from producing accurate articulation. Certainly, structural differences, such as cleft palate can cause difficulties with nasality or articulation. Other children have a tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) that may be undiagnosed, yet prevent them from raising the tongue enough to produce the tongue-tip sounds, although this is seldom a significant factor.

Neuromuscular problems, such as cerebral palsy, can affect the control of the speech mechanism. These include dysarthria and apraxia. Dysarthria is a problem with the motor control of the speech mechanism while apraxia is a problem with the coordination of speech.

Children with overall developmental delays often have corresponding delays in the development of both language and articulation skills. It is always advisable to consider a child's mental age when assessing his speech and language skills.

In most cases, however, there is no known cause for the articulation delay. Most children with articulation delays have no other disabilities. Their language skills are normal. Their home environments are loving and stimulating, and they are of normal intelligence. While it is wise for parents to obtain advice and assistance dealing with their children's speech errors, they are in no way at fault.

When a speech-language pathologist evaluates a child, he or she will consider the possible causes of a disorder. These contributing factors will often need to be addressed or at least considered in the treatment decisions. Ultimately, however, the primary focus will be on remediation, whether or not any cause is apparent.

Adult Dyslexia Creates Reading Challenges

Adult dyslexia is a common cause of reading difficulty in adults. Many adults were never diagnosed as children, so they have no idea that they are suffering from adult dyslexia. Every job application, mortgage application, or complicated instruction sheet makes them cringe.

If it is, there are may learning techniques that can make reading and writing much easier – coping with dyslexia is easier when you know you have it. Just knowing that there is a name for the problem, and most importantly, that you are not alone in dealing with it, can make all the difference.

Dyslexia treatment has come a long way in recent years, there are now even colleges for learning disabilities, ensuring that anyone who wants an education can get one. These colleges are set up to allow for extra time to take tests, individualized learning styles and more. However, any college is required to make allowances for a disability – even a learning disability. This is one reason testing is so important. If your college determinates that you do indeed have dyslexia, they are then able to offer certain study aides such as textbooks on audio or increased testing time.

Does Stuttering Device Minimize Stuttering Disability?

I tried to avoid talking about any stuttering device previously. The main reason is I do not want to “attack” personally anyone's product. However, I am often asked what I think about this topic. Since I do not want to repeat my answer over and over again, I will post my full response here. It does not matter if you agree or disagree with something I have to say. The most important thing is to derive some benefit from this discussion.

There are so many electronic speech aids available on the market today. DAF, Desktop Fluency System, Fluency Master, Masking Auditory Feedback, Frequency Auditory Feedback, Pocket Fluency System, Telephone Fluency System, Wireless Fluency System are just some of those aids I have come across.

Over the years, I tested almost all electronic devices. There is no shortage of them. It sees as if there is a new device being sold on the market each month. Although the products might have different names, it is very easy to group them together. The main reason is because they operate on the same principles. I will tell you right away I was disappointed with all of them. Some devices I purchased were previously donated to my university's speech clinic. As I checked recently, they are now used for demonstration purposes only. I am glad all young speech pathology students are able to learn how these devices work even though I do not personally see any benefit for people who stutter from such learning. The other devices simply broke on their own. I felt there was no need to fix them as they were useless.

As we already discussed, there is more than one electronic device for stuttering you can purchase previously. Generally, all devices can be put into one category. Some of them tend to “mask” one's voice by producing awful sounds into one of years. The others slow down one's speech and change one's pitch.

I know many scientists who created these products can provide us with very complex explanations on how they work. These explanations tend to be based on sound speech principals, which many of ordinary people do not understand. However, it is safe to place each stuttering anti device into one of above categories.

Personally, I am not against anything that can help us to deal with this communication disorder better. If there is anything you can use, which will help you with stammering, I will recommend you to use it. I came across some speech therapists who are against using any fluency device. They stated that such devices are often used as crutches. They act as distractions that can enhance one's fluency only temporarily. Obviously, they would rather teach you how to use prolongations and cancellations. As I understand they are mainly afraid that these crutches will become like those filler words you use in your speech. You rely on them heavily toill they become a part of this problem.

While it is true that many of those crutches can become a part of this disorder, I doubt you will use them long enough for it to occur. I know you and I wished many times for those speech crutches to make a difference in our lives. Often, when something worked for me even temporarily, it stopped working after some period of time. Thus, there was no need for me to continue using it.

However, my personal experiences with speech aids do not really matter. The main question, however, is as follows:

Does your stuttering device minimize stuttering disability even to some degree?

Well, if you used any electronic products for this disorder in the past, you are already screaming out the answer right now. Of course, the answer is NO! I bet most of you never thought about the possible reasons why very complex products have failed to work. I will give you a full answer right now.

1) YOUR FOCUS REMAINS ON SPEECH IN A REAL WORLD.

You see many electronic products for stuttering are essentially meant to distract you from focusing on your speech during your conversation. For instance, the device that masks your voice operates on this principle. If you do not focus on your speech or do not hear your voice when you try to speak, then your stuttering problem will be minimized to a certain degree. Neverheless, the reduction of stuttering under these circumstances only occurs in your speech therapist's office.

When you are being placed in an “artificial” environment, such as your speech pathologist's office, you do not have a very high level of stress. That is, you are already know your environment. Your speech therapist already knows you stutter. When you will be trying your electronic speech aid, the ideal environment for reduction of stuttering has already been created. No wonder you will start speaking more fluently.

Now, please step out in a real world and try the same thing. You focus will remain on your speech. You will have a high level of anxiety. You will be nervous even when you wear your newly purchased expensive piece of junk. Many people who stutter even report that they are not even aware of the device being attached to their ears and throats when they are facing a conversation in a real world. In fact, they only thing that they can focus on is their speech.

2) THERE ARE NO SECONDARY SYMPTOMES OF STUTTERING IN YOUR THERAPIST'S OFFICE.

I already discussed this reason above. We all know stuttering disability is very complex. There are more components to stuttering than one's speech. People who stutter have anxiety, panic attacks, lack of self-confidence and other emotional baggage. Collectively, these symptoms are called secondary. In your therapist's office, these symptoms are no longer “visible.” Yet, they will pop in when you step outside. When you are generally calm, you really do not need any electronic product to speak more fluently. You can do it on your own.

There is a common pattern you can observe during any college speech therapy. When you meet your new clinician, you might stammer a little. However, when you get used to her, you will be speaking as fluently as she is. This will typically happen towards the middle or the end of each college term. Many clinicians wrongfully assume it is their work with you that has led to such “dramatic improvement” in fluency. It is the same effect of artificial environment I already discussed above.

Familiar and low-stress environment (your therapist's office) = no secondary symptoms of stuttering = fluency. This formula is very simple. Yet, many therapists ignore it. It is the main explanation why everything works in your clinician's office and does not work when you step outside.

By the way, there is nothing you can really do to make things work. If some speech failure “takes place” in a real world, most therapists have one explanation for it. You did not work hard enough on your prolongations. Work hard on them. You will experience exactly the same effect when you step outside. You can not say even several words fluently. This is a very painful and sad thing to realize. You just thread your money on something that has not produced even small positive result.

3) THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IS “ABLE” TO ADDRESS ONLY ONE COMPONENT OF THIS DISORDER.

Again, I appeared to talk about it already. The reason, which is stated above, is probably the main reason why your electronic product will not minimize your stuttering disability. All electronic devices deal with only one component of stuttering. It is your speech. We all know there are so many of them. However, the devices can not address those components no matter how great there are. When the other components of stuttering are left untreated, they will certainly bring back stuttering.

Speech aids can not prevent you from feeling anxious. They can not stop your panic attacks. They can not prevent your heart from racing. They can not eliminate your fear of speaking. Often, these aids can not even decrease the level of your disfluency. Since they do not work, they can not even boost your self-confidence.

There are also some other things I want to discuss with you briefly. As you know most devices cost over $ 1,000 US dollars. Some cost $ 4,000-5,000 dollars. Purchasing any electronic product to treat this condition is a major financial investment for people in all occupations, not just college students. Many companies do not give enough time to test it. Even when you return the product, these companies will issue you only a partial refund.

Let's assume you want to purchase one specific electronic device for stuttering. You will have only 30 days to test it. It sounds good initially. However, when the product is being shipped to you, you will need to wait probably one week to receive it. You will need a few days to figure out how to use it. You will also need time to ship it back or you will not even get a partial refund for several thousands of dollars you just paid. Consequently, your time to test the product will be extremely limited. The manufacturers do hope the time to test it will lapse fast or they will suffer a financial loss.

Do not also assume that when you paid, you will stop dealing with the manufacturer. Many devices break once your warranty expires. Most warranties expire in one year. You will be paying for the same junk over and over again. Why? The main reason is many manufacturers always try to find ways to minimize their costs. Do not be surprised to find your device is made of cheap materials or it was put together hastily somewhere in China. No wonder now it can not be even turned on!

It also needs to be pointed out that electronic products will make you look weird and strange to other people. Even when you have a very long hair, people can still see there is something being attached to your throat. Many people also assume you have a hearing problem when you wear your device. I know what you are saying now … Who cares as long as I do not stutter? However, you will stutter and look weird to others at the same time. As we all have already examined, these products do not decrease stuttering in a real world.

Lastly, I just wanted to mention something you probably have not thought of yourself. The devices that make sounds are not good for your hearing and your brain. Let me illustrate it. Let's assume you have a CD player with ear plugs. You like listening to your favorite music. In fact, you listened to it every day for many hours. If the volume of your music is high enough, you will eventually begin to lose your hearing. What if you have a device that makes awful noises in order to prevent your hearing your own voice? Do you think your hearing will stay the same? Also, no one has studied the effect of such products on your brain. Do you think wearing something like this will have no negative effect on your brain?

Now, I think we have the answer to our question. It is NO! Stuttering device can not minimize stuttering disability. Moreover, it may have even potentially damaging effects on your health.

Stuttering Disability and Employment

In this stuttering disability and employment article, we will examine employment options for people with this disorder. I often hear the saying that is as follows: “You can be anything you want to be in life.” May be, your parents told you this. May be, it was some teacher in school. Personally, I do not think it is true. Arguably, you can be what you want to be if you have a talent. In most cases, even having talent is not enough. Many jobs require one to possess certain education, experience and certain skills. Just saying that you have a talent on your resume will not get you anywhere. On the top, some people have disabilities to deal with. These disabilities may severely limit their job choices.

We also need to concern ourselves with our current job market. We might like some profession. We know, however, that there are very few opportunities for us to enter this profession. Still going for it with this knowledge will be extremely risky, to say the least. On the other hand, we should not go for various jobs that are easy to get, but we would hate doing. This will definitely lead to having an unhappy life.

Should your stuttering disability affect your employment choices?

Yes, it should. Many people, however, will tell you otherwise. Only a fool will not consider his own limitations . If a person can not say even one single word without stuttering, it is highly unquestionably that he will become an anchor on TV. Yes, exceptions do occur. However, you do not want to take your chance to be that exception.

Please note I do not discourage people from pursuing their interests. All I am saying is always always need to be realistic and practical in life. If you are short and simply not good at playing basketball, you can not hope to become the next Michael Jordan. You can not hope to become him even if you love playing basketball very much. I hope this discussion makes sense to you.

Should you tell your potential employer that you stutter during your interview?

I say you should not. Many people, however, will tell you otherwise. They will tell you that just stating your stuttering will help you to communicate more easily. You will know that your potential employer will be aware of your stuttering disability, and you will not have to hide it anymore. That much is true. However, it will not help you to get a job. Not all employers understand what stuttering is. A person who does not understand the nature of this problem can choose to stay away from you. If this person is your potential employer, you will not get hired. We face job discrimination every day.

Does not my stuttering get protection under our federal laws?

Stuttering gets protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act. One has a disability if his condition significantly limits a major life activity. Speaking is a major life activity. The question turns to assessing one's limitation on speaking. In another words, the severity of stuttering mainly determinates if a person has a disability or not. If your stuttering is enough enough, then you are considered to be disabled. Thus, you get protection under our laws.

In a work setting, a person gets protection if he is qualified to perform his fundamental job duties. Communication might be considered a fundamental job duty in many positions. In many cases, people's stuttering is not enough to pose a serious problem for his job qualification.

Also, it needs to be pointed out that fundamental job duties are allowed to be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations may include schedule modification and change in assignments.

As you understand now, the laws are somewhat confusing. I tried to put everything in a simple way. I hope I shed some light on this topic. Neverheless, it is important for you to understand that the reality is very different from what our laws state it should be. In real life, when you will get discriminated, you will never get an honest explanation from your potential employer why it has happened.

People who stutter face job discrimination every day. I was a victim of job discrimination after college. I did not get hired since my “right” qualifications for many jobs. I had seen people not getting promoted on a job just because the employee wrongfully believed that his employee who stutters could not do well in his new capacity. What was the reason beyond this belief? As you might have guessed it, the reason was this person's stuttering problem.

As you are reading it, you are probably thinking of your own job discrimination experiences. It is very hard to use federal laws to get any kind of protection. As I stated above, the reality is different from what you can read in our federal law books.

What are ideal jobs for you if you stutter?

Ideal jobs are those that you will like doing and can provide the most job security to you. Ideal jobs are also those that have the least impact on your stuttering disability. Defining an ideal job can only be done subjectively. For some people, it can mean becoming a police officer, a doctor, or an accountant. However, you should take into consideration my definition of ideal employment if you want to be successful in life. Simply ignoring stuttering disability, job security or your specific interests can lead to a big disaster when it comes to employment.
